ALDEA
An Affordable Housing Village Providing Long-Term Transitional Housing for Special Needs Residents including Victims of Domestic Violence and their Children.
Nineteen Detached and Paired Residences in a self-contained village setting
located in the City of Pomona, California.
Project Description
Aldea, LocalCHA’s first project, is an innovative approach to providing long-term transitional housing in an affordable housing environment for special needs purposes, including victims of domestic violence and their children who are often victims of violence as well. In contrast to traditional affordable housing developments, which tend to be high-density multi-family apartment buildings, Aldea consists of 19 single-family detached and paired residences clustered along a private street in the City of Pomona, County of Los Angeles. Aldea aims to provide a more “normal” housing experience without the stigma often associated with low income affordable housing complexes and the propensity for clustered “ghetto-type” negative living environments. By placing victims of domestic violence and their children in traditional type housing in regular neighborhoods, the recovery of these participants is greatly accelerated.
Development Team
LocalCHA has brought together a development team consisting of local non-profit and for-profit organizations to make the promise of Aldea a reality.
The team is led by Far West Industries (“Far West”), a real-estate investor, developer and builder of quality residential communities for over 25 years. Over 2,000 residential units have been either developed or built by Far West and its related companies throughout Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties. Most recently, Far West completed a 27 unit multi-family townhome project in the City of Redondo Beach, California that contained an affordable housing component.
The House of Ruth, Inc. will serve as the primary service provider for Aldea and will bring over 30 years of experience providing services to women and children victimized by domestic violence in eastern Los Angeles and western San Bernardino counties. Founded in 1977, the House of Ruth is a well-known and highly respected organization that operates a 25-bed emergency shelter, a 20-bed transitional shelter, two walk-in centers providing counseling and educational classes, temporary restraining order clinics in two courts and a 24-hour hotline. Over 1,400 women and children are helped by the House of Ruth each year on their journey towards self-sufficient lives free from violence
